<description>Protest at UN in New York against President Preval: Claude Janvier assaulted.
Tuesday the of May, day marked the 207th anniversary of creation of Haiti’s national flag, a Haitian opposition group from New York under the leadership of Mr. Arios Denis organized a protest in front of the UN headquarters in the Big Apple aimed at seeking the resignation of President Rene Preval. I must say that Arios Denis is a former candidate in the last presidential elections in Haiti. The electoral council rejected his candidacy because of his “US citizen status”. He received his school report card as we say in our vernacular.
This event, which lasted from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, brought together a total of twenty nine protesters who traveled from Boston, Miami, Canada, Switzerland, and of course New York. It&#039;s a big disappointment for the organizers who expected the participation “of thousands of people” lamented former ambassador Jules Nicolas.
Under heavy rain and in total disarray a first group of participants asked for the resignation of President Preval and the formation of a new Provisional Electoral Council to be responsible for organizing the general elections this year.
Although the claims were the same for everyone, the second group had a special request: the unconditional return of former President Jean Bertrand Aristide currently in exile in South Africa.
A deplorable incident occurred when Claude Janvier, while speaking to a reporter from channel 11 New York, TV station, sought the return to Haiti of his favorite idol, Jean Bertrand Aristide. At this precise moment, in front of cameras and journalists scalded, he was jostled, threatened, insulted, and even forced to terminate the interview prematurely. It is with sadness that I note hooligans are almost everywhere in Haitian society.
Dieudonne Calixte a Hyde Park resident, who traveled from Boston to New York, thinks that the failure of this protest both in term of participation or organization is a clear proof that shows that its organizers are not better than the team that is currently in power has the Port-au-Prince.
Claude Janvier, who came from Boston with seventeen among the 29 people who attended the event, mostly members of his lavalass movement had immediately taken over Route 95 North toward Massachusetts about thirty-five minutes before the end of the protest. This misadventure seemed to leave a bitter taste in the mouth of this moderate community activist.
I would support these protests both in Haiti and the Diaspora if and only if they would seek to put pressure under the Preval government to make it more transparent. Those who are seeking the departure of Preval want to deliver the country to collective suicide. We are unfortunately poor and cannot do that much to relieve the every day misery of the population. The “whites” at this present situation will not let go Preval. They are not stupid. They know that the Preval/ Bellerive government is the expression of our political class and maybe our society. Let’s be realistic.

<description>I am a third year student at CUNY Law School and an intern in the school’s Immigrant and Refugee Rights Clinic. A group of students in the Clinic is interested in assisting Haitians with obtaining TPS (Temporary Protected Status) visas. We are contacting you to see if Haitian-Americans United for Progress would be interested in hosting us to offer this free service to members of your community.

We are currently receiving training to assist Haitians with TPS applications and would work under the supervision of our clinic supervisors, who are practicing attorneys. All we would need from your organization would be assistance with publicizing the event and possibly a space to hold the event.

Please let me know if you would be interested or if there are other ways we as law students could assist your community. We are very sorry for the loss that you are experiencing as a result of the earthquake last week and we look forward to helping in this capacity.
